Somewhere, it just sort of…sneaks up on us. Maybe it’s a gradual mindset shift that we experience through the years, but between responsibilities, schedules, and endless to-do lists, many of us (myself included!) forgot how to play. As kids, play was effortless, wasn’t it? It was how we explored, connected, and found joy. But as adults? Play often feels like a luxury, something we don’t have time for. Yet, research (and life experience!) tells us that play isn’t just for children—it’s a vital part of well-being at any age!
Play isn’t just about having fun—it’s about restoration, creativity, and connection. It reduces stress, boosts problem-solving skills, and even improves relationships. Engaging in playful activities helps adults cope with stress and enhances mood! Studies have even shown that play positively impacts the brain, triggering the release of endorphins, reducing cortisol levels, and fostering relaxation.
Brené Brown reminds us, “Play is the oxygen for creativity. It’s what we’re supposed to be doing.” When we make space for play, we’re also making space for joy, for spontaneity, and for fully engaging in life.
Did you know that a study found that 60% of adults who engage in regular play experience less stress? Yet, 43% of adults have reduced their playful activities due to increased responsibilities and obligations!
John Mark Comer, in his book The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry, emphasizes the importance of slowing down and embracing rest, which aligns closely with the concept of integrating play into our lives. Bob Goff encourages us to live “whimsical lives,” suggesting that embracing play and spontaneity can lead to a more fulfilling existence, and Annie F. Downs, in her podcast “That Sounds Fun,” often discusses the joy and necessity of finding fun in everyday life – highlighting that play is a crucial component of adult well-being!
Don’t worry! The good news is that you don’t need a playground to rediscover the magic of play. Here are a few easy and fun ways to invite more playfulness into your life:
1. Embrace Adventure: Try something new just for the joy of it—roller skating, paddleboarding, or even just dancing around your kitchen.
2. Get Outside: Nature has a way of inviting play. Take a spontaneous walk, jump in the waves, or go on a scavenger hunt with your kids (or by yourself)!
3. Tap into Creativity: Paint, doodle, bake, build a Lego set—engage in something without the pressure of having to be good at it.
4. Play Games: Board games, card games, or even a simple game of tag in the backyard—games are a great way to bring laughter and foster connection!
5. Be Silly on Purpose: Tell jokes, do impressions, make up funny voices—anything that makes you laugh just because it feels good.
6. Revisit Childhood Hobbies: Think back to activities you loved as a child. Whether it was flying kites, playing a musical instrument, or crafting, revisiting these can reignite that child-like joy!
7. Join a Group or Class: Engage in group activities like dance classes, sports teams, or art workshops. The social aspect of these can add an extra layer of fun!
8. Schedule Playtime: Just as you would schedule meetings or appointments, set aside dedicated time each week for playful and fun activities.
One of my favorite ways to play? Hello, Disney World! Every time I’m there, I feel like a kid again and I’m reminded how important it is to embrace joy, whimsy, and play. Whether it’s riding a rollercoaster, eating a Mickey-shaped snack, or laughing until my sides hurt, I know that play is a gift—not just for kids, but for all of us!
So, consider this your invitation: What’s one playful thing you can do this week? Whatever it is, do it wholeheartedly! Play isn’t frivolous—it’s essential. And life is far too short to be taken seriously all the time!
